ADAPTIVE PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Grades 9 – 12 (year or semester): G

Prerequisites: 1 to 4 semesters required as per physician’s referral

A variety of physical activities coupled with individualized conditioning and rehabilitative programs designed to meet the special needs of students referred by a physician.

COURSE 1: FRESHMAN PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Grade 9 (year): G

Prerequisites: None

PE Course 1 is a required Physical Education class for all freshman students. It focuses on a variety of movement patterns in aquatics, dance/ rhythms, and individual and dual activities for knowledge and performance of positive physical activity to support lifelong fitness. This course is a coed environment and must be passed in order to enter Course 2.

COURSE 2: PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Grades 10 (year or semester): G

Prerequisites: Sophomore level; passed Course 1

PE Course 2 will focus on the advanced development of motor skills and movements, expand upon the skills and goals from Course 1 while focusing on self-defense and combative sports, gymnastics, tumbling, and a wide variety of team activities. Students should have received a passing grade in both semesters of PE Course 1 in order to enter this course. This course is a coed environment and must be passed in order to enter a Course 3 elective in Physical Education.

COURSE 3: PHYSICAL EDUCATION: AEROBICS

Grades 11, 12 (year or semester): E

Prerequisites: Passed Course 1 and Course 2

Demonstrate knowledge and skill in aerobic activities—running, bicycling, and swimming with an introduction to triathlon. Required: road bicycle

COURSE 3: PHYSICAL EDUCATION: INDIVIDUAL AND DUAL ACTIVITIES

Grades 11, 12 (year or semester): E

Prerequisites: Passed Course 1 and Course 2

Demonstrate knowledge and skill in individual and dual sports—yoga (techniques of relaxation), core performance, pilates, and badminton.

COURSE 3: PHYSICAL EDUCATION: FITNESS

Grades 11, 12 (year or semester): E

Prerequisites: Passed Course 1 and Course 2

Students will learn about and practice various fitness techniques with an emphasis on metabolic training in order to improve body composition, strength and aerobic capacity. The class will include goal setting, nutrition and assessments of multiple fitness modalities.
