Welcome to Accelerated English 1 at Silver Creek High School! Your recommended summer assignment is as follows:

Read FOUR books of your choice

Please select texts you have not read before. I encourage you to visit book review websites like Amazon and GoodReads to explore books that interest you. Use www.whatshouldireadnext.com/index.php to get recommendations based on books you have enjoyed in the past. Visit your local library--purchasing books is not required.

Come prepared to discuss and write about your books of choice in the first few weeks of school.  You are also encouraged to read as many books of your choice as you can fit in this summer!

If you have friends or classmates who are still interested in this course, have them complete this form goo.gl/forms/eJUvcaP1DDm14UDC2 as soon as possible. You can still sign up. Remember E1A is for all students who have a genuine interest in wanting to improve their reading and writing skills.

I’m looking forward to meeting you all. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to email me.

This survey is to find a percentage on how many students are constantly struggling because of the cost of house bills. Many students are forced to work to help pay for their house bills. High school students' well being are also being negatively affected because of the bills. Some parents are not able to make enough money for food, water, etc... So this survey stands out to students and teachers to help us understand how we can fix this problem with San Jose housing. Take this survey to help us reach out to those kids and students

The Silver Creek Drama Warriors are proud to present the Spring production, "Almost, Maine." The play, written by Broadway actor John Cariani, comprises nine short plays that explore love and loss in a remote, mythical almost-town called Almost, Maine. The play was the number one produced high school play in the United States in 2017, according to National Public Radio.

There are only four performances of this absolutely fantastic show:

Girl Code @Stanford, is a summer program for rising high school seniors in the San Francisco Bay Area. Over the course of two weeks, students will get to experience computer science firsthand through an introduction to computer programming, tours of local tech companies and research labs, and visits from leading academics and industry professionals. Thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor, the program is available completely free-of-charge to all students.

We firmly believe that everyone, regardless of background, can thrive as a computer scientist. We start off each summer assuming absolutely no prior programming experience, and by the time we're done our students are routinely creating their own games and custom animations as final projects. Our students have gone on to study computer science in college (around 40% of students go on to take a CS class in their first year of college, and around 20% end up declaring computer science as a major). We've even had former Girl Code participants come back to serve as teaching staff in future years.

We are currently soliciting nominations for students to attend this year's offering of Girl Code. We are looking for current high-school juniors with strong math and science skills, but with no prior programming experience. We will be giving preference to students from those groups who are the most underrepresented in information technology: women, African Americans, Latinas/Latinos, and Native Americans.

Nominated students must complete our brief application form, available online at http://bit.ly/GirlCode2018. As a reminder, in addition to filling out this form, you'll need to be nominated by one of your high school teachers or counselors, as well as send in a letter of recommendation and a copy of your must recent transcript.

All nominations are due by Friday, March 16th.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to email us at girlcode@cs.stanford.edu or to visit our website, girlcode.stanford.edu

Hello Juniors, Sophomores, Sophomores and Freshmen. As electives are being chosen and whatnot, I ask for you to consider taking a look at joining Philosophy!

It's a really fun class filled with reading, discussing, and expanding on philosophical ideas of the past and applying them to our lives today. I took the class this year and it's been nothing short awesome. Also, many schools don't have a Philosophy class, so take advantage of the wonderful program and sign up!

For questions, just come to C-7 to talk with Mr. Dyer, he'll be happy to answer any of your questions.

We believe that the physical education department is unfair to all the students that participate. This is because some kids are not capable of doing some of the assessments in PE. For example, to get a 100% on the mile run, kids have to run it in eight minutes or under.  There are obviously kids who can do these assessments, however, some kids will give their best try and still not be able to an A.

Silver Creek National Honor Society is presenting the first ever Creek Conversations: Breaking Barriers, and we're looking for Silver Creek students to share their stories.

We're looking for people to give a 5-10 minute talk (similar to the style of a TED talk) about a personal experience in which they have "broken barriers." This can include discovering something new, resisting a popular way of thought, or even overcoming an internal obstacle. We deliberately made the theme flexible, so it can be interpreted in many different ways!

The following link is for sign-ups and further information: tinyurl.com/CreekConversations

Auditions will take place November 8-9 and 13-15 at lunch. The actual event will take place on Monday, November 20, at 3:30 p.m. in Raider Hall.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact any of the NHS officers.
President: Lan Duong
Vice President: Zayn Cochinwala
Co-Secretaries: Shreya Kapoor & Britney Black
Treasurer: Shyra Alam

The De Anza College Promise

We’re excited to tell you about a new program, the De Anza College Promise, that will assist low-income students from local high schools who would like to enroll at De Anza starting fall 2018.

The promise is simple: Your first year of college is free if you qualify.

This program is designed to benefit students who need it the most. That means the lowest income students, including many who are undocumented and those who are aging out of the foster youth system.

Seniors graduating from area high schools can qualify if they are first-time college students entering De Anza with a Cal Grant in fall 2018.

The De Anza College Promise provides these benefits to participating students:

  • $500 toward the cost of books and course materials
  • Payment of all required fees for the first year (excluding those already covered by the Board of Governors fee waiver)
  • Membership in the Promise Learning Community

To qualify, students must apply for a Cal Grant no later than March 2. Undocumented students can qualify under the California Dream Act. You can find more information atwww.deanza.edu/outreach/de-anza-college-promise.

The Scholarship is for up to $14,500 for an associate's degree and $29,000 for a bachelor's degree.

The Opportunity Scholarship is for high school graduates who (1) have DACA, TPS, or would have met the DACA eligibility criteria; and (2) live in targeted, locked-out states that do not offer in-state tuition to DREAMers. The Scholarship is for up to $80,000 to cover tuition, fees, and on-campus housing and meals for a bachelor’s degree.
