Silver Creek National Honor Society is presenting the first ever Creek Conversations: Breaking Barriers, and we're looking for Silver Creek students to share their stories.

We're looking for people to give a 5-10 minute talk (similar to the style of a TED talk) about a personal experience in which they have "broken barriers." This can include discovering something new, resisting a popular way of thought, or even overcoming an internal obstacle. We deliberately made the theme flexible, so it can be interpreted in many different ways!

The following link is for sign-ups and further information: tinyurl.com/CreekConversations

Auditions will take place November 8-9 and 13-15 at lunch. The actual event will take place on Monday, November 20, at 3:30 p.m. in Raider Hall.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact any of the NHS officers.

The De Anza College Promise

We’re excited to tell you about a new program, the De Anza College Promise, that will assist low-income students from local high schools who would like to enroll at De Anza starting fall 2018.

The promise is simple: Your first year of college is free if you qualify.

This program is designed to benefit students who need it the most. That means the lowest income students, including many who are undocumented and those who are aging out of the foster youth system.

Seniors graduating from area high schools can qualify if they are first-time college students entering De Anza with a Cal Grant in fall 2018.

The De Anza College Promise provides these benefits to participating students:

  • $500 toward the cost of books and course materials
  • Payment of all required fees for the first year (excluding those already covered by the Board of Governors fee waiver)
  • Membership in the Promise Learning Community

To qualify, students must apply for a Cal Grant no later than March 2. Undocumented students can qualify under the California Dream Act. You can find more information atwww.deanza.edu/outreach/de-anza-college-promise.

SCHS PTSA's first Campus Beautification event -
a HUGE success!!

THANKS to the efforts of over 100 students, dedicated parents and staff, the first Campus Beautification event was a BIG success.

The event was held on Sunday October 29th. Volunteers worked from 7 am to 3:30 pm to weed, plant, mulch and water various areas on the campus around the Administrative building, Raider Hall, Parent Center and Staff lounge.

We are extremely grateful for the support provided by the students of various clubs, Mr Anthony Cardott of the Gardening Club, many parent volunteers including Raj Gandhasri, Susan Williams and many others who lead students in groups to work in various areas....

Lantanas, Chrysanthemums, Roses, Hibiscus, Rosemary in mostly Raider colors were planted.

It was a great community event that took over 450 man hours to complete!

PTSA thanks every one who supported this event.

Stay tuned for details on the next Beautification event...

ATTENTION STAFF OF SCHS!

LSU would love to announce a contest we are holding this school year for dia de los muertos!

What is dia de los muertos? Día de los muertos is a latin american tradition in which our family members and loved ones who have passed away are remembered. We would love to bring this cultural tradition to SCHS community!

We are looking for contestants that are willing to put an ofrenda in their classroom, and have it on display on the day of our dia de los muertos event. The community will vote for the most creative ofrenda.

Ofrendas are an essential part of Day of the Dead celebration.

The ofrenda is set on a table. Ofrendas must include pictures of loved ones who've passed away, items they were fond of, something they liked to snack on(for example candies, chips), candles(for safety precaution please do not light them on), flowers, and gifts(toys for the kids).

You may search up ''Day of the Dead ofrendas'' on google images to get an idea of how an ofrenda looks like.

Still unsure of what Interact is after signing up on Club Rush? Attached below are informational flyers on what Interact is and what we do!

So what exactly is Interact?

Interact, short for International Action, is an international organization of service that fosters leadership and responsible citizenship, and promotes international understanding and peace. Interact club members carry out service projects and learn about the world whilst being able to discover a passion for service. Interact clubs are sponsored by Rotary Clubs. Every year, Interact clubs organize at least two service projects: one that benefits their community and one that encourages international understanding.

Hearing so much about how Interactors changing the world and creating a ripple effect in their communities and internationally…. how much better can it get? A LOT BETTER.

Why just listen to what others are doing when you can take part and empower change in the world yourself? Stop by Silver Creek Interact Club’s first meeting of the year to learn how you can do just that.

By taking that first step into your Interact journey, you will be apart of a family of over 8,000 Interactors from Interact 5170, a district of 98 schools all the way from Oakland to Santa Cruz and Gilroy. You will take part in community and international service where you will contribute to our district’s international and community goals. And by the time you step foot outside of high school and end your Interact journey, you will have left a legacy and a footprint on the world, no matter how big or small it is.

We encourage you to come to our first Interact meeting of the year to learn how you will be able to change the world through simple acts of service. We hope to see you this Tuesday, September 19th, during lunch in Raider Hall!

Thank you to all teachers, parents and students for being patient with us as we go through the balancing process in student schedules.  As our school continues to grow in size, the amount of movement between classes becomes extremely narrow.

We are very close to ensuring that students have the classes they need to graduate.  We again ask for your patience, as we rush towards the finish line this coming week.

Counselors will not be available starting Monday August 21 - Wednesday August 23, 2017.  In order to ensure that we can hear everyone, we will need time to work on the request that students have placed into our office.

We truly understand the hardship that this has caused, but please understand this is a necessary step in order to ensure that all students are in the necessary classes for them to graduate.

Thank you again to everyone for your patience.

Hello Raiders

You are totally keeping this campus on fleek by picking up your trash during Break and Lunch. For a school this size, students do leave trash but not too much.

So, keep picking up your trash and throwing it away and if you should happen to see some, it would be a nice gesture to put it in the trash as well as encourage others to throw their trash away.

Go Raiders!

Dear Silver Creek Community,

On behalf of Silver Creek High School Administration, upon further consideration of our parking permit guidelines, we are revising our previous price list to include the following changes:

Students are required to have a parking permit when parking on campus, students must only park in the designated parking areas.

Parking permits are free of charge upon providing proof of a valid Driver's License, proof of insurance and registration to the school bank clerk. Please note that we have a limited number of permits to be issued.

Our growing enrollments have increased the number of concerns for vehicle safety.

As always Silver Creek High School strives to ensure the safety of our students and community.

Silver Creek is in its second year of Link Crew, a transition program to help incoming freshmen adapt to high school life. Approximately ten freshmen will be assigned to one or two Link Leaders (carefully trained juniors and seniors) creating a crew that is linked for the school year. Crews offer assistance to one another when needed and are encouraged to attend Link Crew events together. We are excited to welcome the class of 2021 at this year’s Link Crew Freshman Orientation on Wednesday, August 2, 8am-12pm in our main gym (located near the tennis courts along Silver Creek Road). All who attend are invited to stay for a free lunch to continue to bond with your crew and make some friends.

Want to learn how to speak up for yourself? Or just speak up for something?

The Silicon Valley Urban Debate League 2017 Summer Institute is accepting applications from interested high school students. Join us for an amazing week of workshops led by some of the nation's best debate coaches, community building, skill development, and FUN! Transportation, meals, and materials are provided, and it’s all FREE for qualified students! Spaces are limited for this amazing opportunity. For more information please call or email us at summer@svudl.org or 408-337-2493 or go to http://www.svudl.org/summer/registration to register.

Presidents debate. Sports commentators debate. Have you ever tried to talk your parents into letting you go out? You were debating! No matter what you are interested in - business, law, education, politics, even music or sports - you will need to be able to speak your mind with clarity and power. Combining public speaking, critical thinking, teamwork and strategy, debate is a powerful activity to help you develop your positions, speak your mind and respond to those who disagree with you.

Thousands of students across America have earned scholarships to college because of debate. Debaters succeed because they learn how to use their voice as a meaningful, powerful tool. College admissions officers know this and look for debaters to recruit them.

Ask anyone who has done it and they will tell you straight up: debate is fun. Speaking your mind in a competitive situation where people listen to what you say is an amazing feeling. Debate helps you build confidence and use your words to impress friends, parents, teachers, and more. The trophies you win, the friends you gain, the places you travel, all of these make debate an experience you will remember for the rest of your life. Come to the SVUDL Summer Institute and learn what it’s all about!

If you signed up for or plan to take AP Language for the 2017-2018 school year, please do the following during the summer break:

Summer Assignment 2017 Advanced Placement Language and Composition

This course is about understanding rhetoric, the art of persuasion.  To this end, Ms. Cargill, Mr. Head, and Mrs. Madrigal ask that you start tuning in to the many obvious and subtle ways you are "encouraged" to act, think, or believe a particular way--for instance, why is "encouraged" in quotation marks?

For AP Lang, get used to the idea that "text" can mean something written, a person's body language, or even a picture.  Advertisements, music, editorial cartoons, comic strips, political speeches, photographs, newspaper articles, vlogs, blogs, dogs (maybe?)--what can people use to send messages to you about themselves or about how they think you should be?  For example, will you belong to a certain group by listening to this music?  Does that soda company want you to associate drinking its products with having fun?  Will wearing these jeans make you fit in with the cool kids?  Does agreeing with this individual make you smart?  Does following this group make you safer?

This summer, take a critical view of your world.  Ask yourself the following questions about various texts, and submit them through Google Forms at https://goo.gl/forms/3MCammfdoxKLjNbu2:

1. What is the nature of the text (e.g. printed words, a photograph, a commercial)?

2. What is the message of the text?

3. Is the text appealing to your:

A) emotions, like fear, joy, a desire to belong, a need to feel special, etc.?

B) intelligence?

C) faith?

D) bias?

4. Why does the speaker expect you to believe him/her/it?  Does the speaker have some kind of authority

or superior knowledge? good character? the ability to intimidate?  experience?

You should post and explain at least ten examples by 11:59 PM Sunday, August 13.

You may view your submissions and your peers’ on Google Sheets at https://goo.gl/0ZMwkz.

It is recommended that you read two texts and the short story this summer.  Come prepared to discuss and write about both texts in the first few weeks of school.  You are also encouraged to read as many books of your choice as you can this summer! You can find all of the books at your local library or used book store; I have also included a .pdf link to Of Mice and Men.

Please read:

Of Mice and Men

by John Steinbeck

PDF: https://goo.gl/5DJ2wG

The Lottery (short story)

by Shirley Jackson

And your choice of one of the following (if you have read any of these already, pick a new book):

Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes

by Chris Crutcher

Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe

by Benjamin Saenz

Freak the Mighty

by Rodman Philbrick

The Outsiders

by E.E. Hinton

AP Literature 2017-2018

Summer Assignment

Welcome to AP Literature and Composition!

Your summer assignment is easy.  Please select a book to read over the summer.  That's it!  Read anything you want.

During the first few weeks of school, you will use this piece of literature to help define literary merit.

Please be sure that you can discuss your choice novel in detail.  You should be able to explain character development, plot structure, themes, symbols, and motifs upon your return.

You are not required to annotate, but most students find it helpful.

If you're stuck and don't know what to choose, e-mail Ms. Newray! (newrayk@esuhsd.org)

Yes future APUSH Students there is a "summer assignment."  But do not worry it is very easy!

Along with competing a few maps and worksheets, students will be expected to read the first two chapters of the textbook and complete vocabulary and review questions.

Everything can be found on Schoolloop

APUSH Summer Work

Note:  While it is suggested that you have the assignment completed over the summer, it is not required.  Students will not need to turn it in until the second week of school.  However, if you don't wish to be overworked the first week of school perhaps avoid procrastination :)

Be sure to come out to the X Quad at lunch on Thursday to vote for your 2017-2018 ASB Officers! Read their statements below, so you can make an informed choice!

ASB PRESIDENT - ZAYN COCHINWALA

Hey SILVER CREEK!! I'm Zayn Cochinwala and I'm running for your 2017-2018 ASB President. After working in a leadership commission, being in class office, and ASB, I know how multiple aspects of our leadership program work.

My passion and dedication towards our school is undeniable, and I hope that I can continue to show that love for our school in senior year, as your President.

VOTE ZAYN!

ASB VICE PRESIDENT - NICHOLAS GONZALEZ

Hey Raiders! I'm Nicholas Gonzalez and I'm running for ASB Vice President. I've been a part of Student Council/Leadership/Class Office/ASB since elementary school every year since the 6th grade. At Creek, I currently have 3 years in Leadership and that includes 1 year as an ASB officer, so why not finish it off as your Vice President? I'm hard-working, dedicated, and committed to make events at Silver Creek the best that they can be. I care about the enjoyment of the students and their opinions! With all of that being said, vote for me and help me continue to make Silver Creek a place that everyone can love and enjoy

ASB SECRETARY - BRITNEY BLACK

Hey Raiders! I'm Britney Black and I'm running to be your ASB Secretary. Throughout these last two years in leadership as well as class office I have been able to grow and understand myself more as a leader. Now, not only do I want to influence my class in a greater way but I would like to spread it throughout the whole school. With that, I need your help! Please come out tomorrow and vote for me Britney Black to be your '17-'18 ASB Secretary.

ASB TREASURER - VENESSA NGUYEN

After being 2019's class Treasurer and Vice President, I have a good understanding of the hard work and commitment that has to be put into leading others. I am confident that I'll be the perfect voice for not only my class but the entire student body and I'll make sure that all funds will be used to benefit US. I cannot wait to work with all the clubs and classes. Every single vote counts.

PLEASE VOTE FOR ME VENESSA NGUYEN FOR ASB TREASURER!

ASB TREASURER - KEVIN TRAN

Hello Raiders! My name is Kevin Tran and I'm running to be your next ASB Treasurer! If elected, I will bare all my dedication and passion for the betterment of Silver Creek High and its denizens. If given the opportunity, I promise to give voice and concern to the shy, the silent, and the underrepresented. It is my mission to do what I can to improve the structure of Silver Creek, to ensure fair fundings and fundraisers for all clubs, no matter the size. My three years of experience within the Leadership class has taught me a plethora of skills and insights. The strongest of these epiphanies would be my realization of how much I love Silver Creek and every unique raider experience. Vote for innovation. Vote for difference. Vote Tran because together we can!

ASB TREASURER - HENRY TRINH

Hey Silver Creek Raiders!!!

My name is Henry Trinh and I am running to be your 2017-2018 ASB Treasurer! Being in Leadership for the past 2 years has taught me many, many valuable lessons and showed me how to love and support my school. I already have experience in the field of Treasurer as I already handle the funds for our school's Student Store. I am so dedicated into helping Silver Creek, and my only goal is to make a positive impact on the majority of students! I want to support our school clubs and I want to make sure that we gain more money for the student body!  I plan on informing club officers on how to manage their accounts and keep up in check with clubs that are not tending to their bank account. I also want to make sure that school funds are being used for Students during business meetings and make sure that students will always benefit from Leadership actions. I am so motivated and so dedicated to helping my lovely school and being elected ASB Treasurer will aid me in helping Silver Creek! I'm here to support and increase the funding for our school, and I'm here to support all you Raiders!

Come out to the X-Quad tomorrow to vote me, Henry Trinh, as your 2017-2018 ASB Treasurer!

Vote for Henry Trinh and your money won't run thin!

ASB TREASURER - NIKKI VADI

HEY RAIDERS!! This year I decided to run, because I have always wanted to run for a leadership position. But I never gave myself and and others a chance to see how well I can lead. I believe if given the chance I would really make an impact on our school. High school has helped me grow and become a more confident, resonsible and hardworking person. You should vote for me not because you are my friend or know me or just randomly pick me, but because you know that in my own way I will help the school with everything in me, that my creativity, responsibility, compassion and many more leadership skills deserve to be used to help this school. COUNT ON ME TO COUNT FOR YOU! VOTE NIKKI VADI FOR ASB TREASURER!

ASB CHIEF JUSTICE - PRACHI BHAGAVATHA

Hi everyone! My name is Prachi Bhagavatha, and I am running for your 2017-2018 ASB Chief Justice! This year is my third year in leadership and second year as head of my commission, so I have an enormous amount of experience organizing and planning school activities. I love participating in and leading all our events ranging from the blood drive to FANTASTICS. Also, I am super dedicated and determined to make Silver Creek a better and fun place for everyone where all the students can voice their opinions. I will go that extra mile to make you all smile, so vote me tomorrow for your ASB Chief Justice! You won't regret it!

ASB CHIEF JUSTICE - CHRISTIAN ZAIA

During my time in leadership, I took note of the importance of an ASB officer (Chief Justice) and now understand the resposibilties and the impact they have on my fellow students. I decided that running for this position will help me accomplish my goal of making a difference for the school. Some of my strengths are that I am motivated, creative, hard-working, passionate, just, and committed to my school. Because I am a well rounded student, having participated in most extracurricular activities, I can bring fair and respectable ideas and judgements to ASB. Now that I have found a position that I believe suits me best, I am ready to take on the responsibilities of Silver Creek's ASB Chief Justice.

Through cheer I have learned how to support my school and encourage the student body as a whole, whether at rallies, football games or basketball games you'll always see me cheering on my fellow Raiders! I have also had a lot of experience through leadership and community service. I strive to work well with my peers, project an awesome image of a silver creek student, and I'm always super enthusiastic and outgoing. If you know me you know I always have a smile on my face! Whether I'm cheering on the school, dressing up on spirit days, or working with the special needs program i'm always doing it with a positive attitude. I can't wait to see what next year holds for us as a school and I hope you vote for me, Olivia Lerner, for ASB spirit leader so we can work together to make it as positive and fun as possible! I would definitely FLIP out if you voted for me!!

Thank you so much to the 80+ volunteers, including many parents and middle school students,  who participated in Saturday's PTSA Beautification Day.  We concentrated on the preparing the Baseball field for the season by weeding the infield, along the outfield fence and the bullpen.  The baseball team did a great job preparing the bullpen!  NJROTC volunteers collected all the tree branches all over campus that had fallen in the recents storms as well as dead cherry tree that had fallen down. Mr Cardott, his adorable son and a crew of volunteers picked up trash all over campus and weeded around Raider Hall.  Thanks to the early crew (arrived at 7AM!) for weeding the stadium hill and the crew that stayed late to clean up!

Thanks to the baseball team and families, Mr. Cardott and his son, Mr. Marr's students, Rodney, NJROTC, Students in Action, California Scholarship Fed, Red Cross, AVID, LEO, Class of 2020, Interact Club, The Boy Scouts, Chaboya Leadership, Quimby Oak Leadership, Bulldog Tech Leadership, Green Society, SCHS PTSA members and all our other students and parents who volunteered!

Thanks for supporting the Silver Creek High School PTSA.  Join us!  It's fun!

Good morning ESUHSD

My friends at the City of San Jose PRNS wanted me to share with you this great opportunity for high school students in San Jose.

The Young Placemakers (YP) is currently accepting applications!

This opportunity will empower youth to identify neglected spaces within San José and implement their own placemaking “activation”. An “activation” is an event that is creatively organized with the intention of bringing public activity into a given space (i.e. a park, a street, a building, etc.). As a participant, you will learn more about the theories behind placemaking, learn about the process that goes into organizing activations, and gain professional skills (i.e. marketing, event production, and budget management) along the way.

There is no cost to participate in Young Placemakers. If requested, you may receive community service hours and letters of recommendation. Equal consideration will be given to all applicants who meet the requirements listed below. To apply to become a Young Placemaker, please complete the application and submit by January 31st, 2017 by 5:00 PM.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Applicant must currently live in San José.
  • Applicant must currently be enrolled in and attending high school (public, private, or charter).
  • Applicant must be able to commit to all meetings (see Time Commitment) and any additional meetings required the week of the YP activation.
  • Applicant must be able to attend the YP activation, which will take place between June 21st and June 30th.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Selected participants will be required to attend a 10-week training course about placemaking.
  • Selected participants will develop, plan, and implement a concept for the placemaking activation.
  • With staff support and guidance, selected participants will create and implement a marketing strategy, recruit volunteers, and coordinate the logistics for the activation.
  • With staff support and guidance, selected participants will manage and run the final activation.

TIME COMMITMENT

  • Selected participants must be available to meet on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday from the date of selection through June 30, 2017.
  • Selected participants may be required to attend additional meetings the week of the final activation (which will be scheduled between June 21st and June 30th.)
  • Parents/guardians will be required to attend an orientation with youth who are selected for the program on Wednesday, February 15th at 6:00pm.
  • If a participant misses more than two (2) consecutive meetings without notification, their placement will be re-evaluated and may be subject to termination (at which time any service hours and/or letters of recommendation may be revoked).
  • Up to two (2) excused absences may be allowed if the lead advisor is notified 48 hours in advance. Excuses must be valid.

Qualified candidates will be contact by phone or e-mail to schedule an interview date and time within 1-2 weeks of the application deadline. Interviews for selected candidates will be scheduled on Thursday, February 9th and Friday, February 10th between 5:30pm and 7:30pm.

If you have any questions regarding the Young Placemakers opportunity, please contact Zacharias Mendez by email at Zacharias.mendez@sanjoseca.gov or by phone at(408) 793-4171.

Thank you to all the volunteers that have participated in the SCHS PTSA Beautification Days.

More than 150 student volunteers provided over 650 community of service hours for our events so far this year! In September, we mulched the stadium hill as well as weeding and picking up trash all over campus.  In December, we concentrated on trash, leaves and weeds.  We started in the Student parking lot, moved to the stadium hill and then it was the students choice on campus.  Some went to the ROTC area, the bus loop, BCE quad, U quad, X quad, rose garden and around the library.

  • Thank you so much to Mr. Marr's class, AVID, NJROTC, CSF, Red Cross, Leadership, Mr. Taylor's class, Key Club, Interact, LEO, Green Society, Japanese Club, SIA, NHS, and all the other students who volunteered "just for fun!"
  • A special thanks to parents David Mirassou and Jennifer Lott, teachers, Mr. Cardott and Nick-Sensei and staff, Mr. Abrigo, Mr. Munoz, Mrs. Ramirez and Mr. Mach.
  • Last but not least, thank you to all the SCHS PTSA members and generous donors to the SCHS PTSA for funding our Beautification Projects!

Thanks for making our campus beautiful for our students, our teachers and our community.

Join us next time! It's fun!

It's time to get a jump on your end of the year cleaning! Come donate your unwanted clothes, shoes, accessories, household items, electronics and books!

On Sunday, December 4th, from 12pm to 4pm the Silver Creek Japanese Program will be hosting a Goodwill Donation Drive in the Staff Parking Lot next to the Administration building.

Your donations could raise as much as $1,250 for our annual Japan Bowl competition! We hope to see all of you there!
